Snorkel Gear Guide for the Caribbean
You can snorkel San Juan with rented gear from any beach kiosk. You will see fish, turtles and coral. But proper gear that fits, does not leak and does not fog is the difference between a 30 minute frustrating swim and a 2 hour comfortable session. This guide covers the four essential items and the optional extras for the Caribbean reef.
Everything here is light enough to fit in a carry on. Total cost for a quality set is 70 to 120 USD, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Cheaper than renting every trip past the second one.
Mask
The most important piece. A leaking mask ends the snorkel. Fit a mask by pressing it on your face without the strap and inhaling. If it stays in place, it fits. Test it before buying.
Get a tempered glass mask with silicone skirt for 25 to 45 USD. Avoid plastic lenses, they scratch and distort. A single window low volume mask is best. Brands: Cressi Marea, Aqua Lung Sport Ventura, US Divers Pinnacle.

Snorkel
A dry or semi dry snorkel with a purge valve at the bottom. The valve lets you clear water with one breath. Dry snorkels close the top valve when submerged so no water enters. 15 to 30 USD.
Avoid full face masks marketed as easy snorkels. They restrict breathing, fog easily and have caused drowning incidents. Use a traditional mask and snorkel.
Fins
Open heel fins with adjustable straps and a separate water shoe are the most travel friendly. They fit different feet and pack flat. Full foot fins are lighter for the plane but only work if they fit your foot exactly. 25 to 60 USD.
Short fins (under 20 inches) are enough for reef snorkel. Long fins are for freediving and overkill in the Caribbean.
Reef safe sunscreen
Conventional sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which kill coral. Puerto Rico has banned them in marine reserves including Escambron. Bring a reef safe mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), 30 SPF minimum, water resistant.
Apply 30 minutes before entering the water. Reapply every 90 minutes. Brands: Stream2Sea, Thinksport, Badger, Raw Elements.
Optional but useful
Anti fog spray or dive gel for the mask. Quick dry microfiber towel. Mesh bag for wet gear. Waterproof phone case (Catalyst, JOTO, dive Volt). Lightweight rash guard if you sunburn easily. A small underwater camera (GoPro or used Olympus TG6) if you want footage.
Skip: pool floats, water proof speakers (rude on the reef), pool noodles, anything that looks fun but disturbs marine life.
Buy mask, snorkel, fins, reef safe sunscreen before your trip. The total cost is recovered after two rental days. Your snorkel sessions will be longer, more comfortable and you will leave the reef cleaner than when you arrived.
